How We Got Our Name

During a family gathering, as we experimented with tie-dying high-quality shirts, one of our children remarked that these weren’t just any shirts — they were “bougie.” This playful comment not only gave our company its name but perfectly captured our commitment to quality and fun, symbolizing the essence of Bougie Tie Dye.

“Driving and Inspiring Others to Elegant Solutions for Complex Problems.”

Kris is the son of two financial planning professionals, and he grew up with a passion for mathematics. In addition to being a Chartered Financial Analyst and Certified Financial Planner, Kris has an MS in Financial Mathematics from the University of Chicago, an MBA from Kenan-Flagler at UNC-Chapel Hill, and a Doctorate in Financial and Retirement Income Planning from the American College.

Kris began his career as a financial advisor in 1998 and eventually took over the business his father began in 1980. He acted as CIO and then CEO of Carroll Financial Associates, one of the Carolinas’ largest Registered Investment Advisors. Kris worked to build his own team and was often called upon by others to consult on practice management and team building at other firms. His ability to scale the existing business led to multiple acquisitions before the eventual sale of Carroll Financial Associates to a national firm in late 2021.

Since December 2021, Kris has been the Managing Director of the Carolinas for Wealth Enhancement Group, managing six offices in North and South Carolina, including 15 teams and more than 60 employees. Kris has a passion for teaching, serving as an adjunct professor at Winthrop University for 12 years, leading study groups to develop other advisors’ skills within Wealth Enhancement Group, and guest lecturing at other university programs. He also works with charities, teaching younger students the basics of investing and finance.

As a financial advisor, Kris has helped hundreds of families plan for their future goals, analyze investment opportunities, and solve a myriad of personal and financial problems. His passion for problem-solving, rooted in his mathematical and analytical abilities, combined with his talent for selling ideas and leading teams to greater success, make him a true entrepreneur.

“Helping Find the Path Forward and the Strength to Do What Needs to Be Done.”

Carolyn grew up in a household of innovators and motivators. She has an innate ability to see the big picture and apply it to the issue at hand. Carolyn is a practical problem-solver who keeps the gears moving and gets the job done.
Carolyn’s first career passion was Physical Therapy. She was captivated by a field that was not only dynamic but also offered her an opportunity to help others. She has treated patients from pediatrics to geriatrics, in settings ranging from the Emergency Room to Intensive Care Units to Out-Patient Clinics and Rehab Facilities. Carolyn has experience in wound care, including at the NC Jaycee Burn Center in Chapel Hill. During her 17 years in the field, she was often called on as a project manager and worked as an adjunct professor for over 10 years at UNC-Chapel Hill, training future physical therapists. She also managed the institution of the first intradepartmental ICU Mentorship and Proficiency Program for Rehabilitation Services.

Carolyn then returned to her family business, weaving residential textiles with the company her father started in 1984. Carolyn worked as COO and later CEO of Marlatex, leading the company through the COVID pandemic. In a manufacturing setting, Carolyn’s focus was streamlining processes and fiscal responsibility. She worked with design and production to introduce new customer customization programs, reduced overhead, and streamlined accounts receivable. Carolyn empowered her employees to work through their own problems and applied her own vision of workflows and operational efficiency to drastically reduce error rates and ultimately streamline operations. Carolyn managed Marlatex through its eventual sale in 2022.

In addition to her role in BTD, Carolyn is the manager of our family office, runs multiple households, helps raise five amazing children, and works at Duke University Hospital so that she can continue to help others.

Throughout her career, Carolyn’s natural ability to connect with people, her attention to detail, and her ability to design efficient procedures have been her greatest strengths.
